What Kids Need to Succeed
We all want our kids to be successful- to do
well in school, make positive, strong friendships and avoid
dangerous substances like alcohol, tobacco or other drugs. One of
the best ways we can help our children reach these goals is to teach
them strong character traits and why each one is so important.
Children with strong character traits, such as
respect and compassion, are more likely
to excel in school and throughout life and are much less
likely to experiment with alcohol, tobacco or other drugs.

definitions for each of five fundamental traits, as well as positive
ways your child can demonstrate that trait and several ways you can
set a good example for your child.
Many schools have included character education
into their lesson plans, activities and assemblies. Check with your
child's school to see what they do- many focus on a different trait
each month. Talk with your children about what they learned at
school and reinforce it with positive examples at home!

book lists for each
trait to help you find books and stories that will help you instill
these traits in your kids.
