What’s the biggest influence on your kids’ decision not to use drugs?

As a parent, you are the most powerful influence on your child’s daily life. It may not always seem like it, especially with teenagers, but your kids are listening to you and do care what you think.

In fact, kids who learn from their parents about the dangers of using drugs are 36% less likely to smoke marijuana and 50% less likely to use inhalants.

It's up to us as parents to teach our children how to make good decisions and safe choices- especially when it comes to the dangers of smoking, underage drinking and drug abuse.  It’s never too early to start talking with your kids about the dangers of drugs and alcohol; most kids first hear about these substances and even consider using them while they are still in elementary school.

The tips and tools included in the parent’s section of our website will help you to aid your children in making safe and positive choices. And will help insure our kids stay away from the dangers of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.

But where do we turn for help?

We know how busy families are today.  That’s why we've created this site to help you access the most up-to-date and accurate information about substance abuse all in one place.

You'll find new articles and activities each month, so please be sure to browse our site often. Together we can ensure our kids make safe choices and make our community a better one.

Here's what you'll find in the Parent's Section:

Tips & Tools
This section features our top 10 tips to help you make sure you're child stays away from drugs, alcohol and other dangerous substances. In addition you'll find links to several articles under each tip with even more information on topics like how to communicate with your child and how to help your kids stand up to peer pressure.

What Kids Need to Succeed
In this section you'll find the top 5 character traits that help all of us succeed. Kids with these traits are more likely to stand up to peer pressure, stay away from drugs and succeed in all areas- whether it's school, sports, or other hobbies. By teaching our kids respect, honesty, compassion, fairness and responsibility at an early age and reinforcing these ideas constantly, we'll help our kids lead healthy, safe, happy lives.

Family Focus
Most of us would like to spend more time with our kids; but with all the demands on our time- school, work, friends, after-school activities- it may seem like we're constantly driving from activity to activity with no real time to connect with our loved ones.

Each month, the Family Focus section will feature a new activity that you can try out with your kids. These activities are designed to encourage you to spend quality time with your kids and to open up the lines of communication. The activities will also help to reinforce those important character traits and build your child's self-esteem.
